Installation guide for UptoLog Database

This page describes how the UptoLog Database is installed.

Software requirements

UptoLog Database must be installed on Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 with MS SQL Server 2005.

Installation instructions

Initially a database is created on the MS SQL server that is going to contain UptoLog Database. As an example this database can be named UptoLogDb.

Subsequently UptoLog Database is created by processing the SQL create script for UptoLog Database on the database UptoLogDb. The script must be processed by a user with administrative rights.

A user that has read and write rights for the database UptoLogDb is created on the MS SQL server. This user is used during the installation of the UptoLog servers: UptoLog Log Server and UptoLog Search Server.

MS SQL server and database set-up

MS SQL server authentication
The MS SQL server is by default assigned to use Windows Authentication mode. The UptoLog servers, UptoLog Log Server and UptoLog Search Server, log on to UptoLog Database through SQL Server Authentication. Consequently the MS SQL server must be configured to use SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode.
SQL Server Authentication mode makes it possible to log on to the MS SQL server with a user that is defined on the MS SQL server.

Size of Database
The MS SQL server puts by default the size of the database to 2MB and autogrowth to 1MB. As the database grows, the small initial size with a growth of only 1MB at a time results in a very fragmented database which results in poor response time.
As a consequence the database should be assigned a more appropriate initial size according to the expected usage, e.g. 1GB, 5GB or 10GB. Also the autogrowth should be increased.
